When will people realise that the only solution to Africa's problems is less people. Not enough has been done to promote birth control.

Kevin Myers.

Kevin Myers is a columnist for the Irish Independent.
He is being charged with hate speech in that country for writing this (on the 10th July 2008):
"It is nearly 25 years since Ethiopia's (and Bob Geldof's) famous Feed The World campaign, and in that time Ethiopia's population has grown from 33.5 million to 78 million today. So why on earth should I do anything to encourage further catastrophic demographic growth in that country? The wide-eyed boy-child we saved, 20 years or so ago, is now a priapic, Kalashnikov-bearing hearty, siring children whenever the whim takes him. There is, no doubt a good argument why we should prolong this predatory and dysfunctional economic, social and sexual system; but I do not know what it is."
John Hollaway is fortunate in that so far no charges have been laid against him for saying the same thing – in this case about Niger in his book Saving Africa –
…As with Zimbabwe, Niger is a country where the government has diluted property rights and effectively discouraged formal agriculture. Aid programmes (and prior to that the French colonialists) have put much effort into providing boreholes for clean water and the immunisation of children. The tremendous reduction in enteric and childhood diseases in a society structured to produce as many children as possible has meant that the population has exploded; there are now about 11 million people in Niger, in an area of about one and a quarter million square kilometres of, at best, semi desert.
A similar inhospitable terrain – I know, I have worked in both – can be found in Western Australia. But this prosperous Australian state has less than two million people in it, despite being twice the size of Niger. If it had the same population density as Niger there would be over twenty million Western Australians trying to survive in semi-desert…There would have been outrage if the Australians adopted polygamy, communal landholding and the bride price and bred themselves into poverty, and they would have been told plainly to abandon the policies that are causing it or expect to starve, because nobody is going to abet them in such foolishness.

John Hollaway came to the then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1949 when he was 9 years old, and began writing as a freelance contributor to the local newspaper when he was 16. However his career took a different turn when he started working on his father’s small gold mine during his school holidays, and he is now an eminent mining consultant, based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His experience covers over 300 assignments in 35 countries, the majority in Africa. Saving Africa! is his fifth book, but he is also the author of numerous papers on mining, development and the environment.
